Open eyes

When doing some research on the perks of having cancer, I came across a comment that basically said, if you think there are perks to having cancer you are absolutely wrong. There are NO perks to having cancer and if you think that there are, well then you probably have brain cancer.

# 1 I'm highly offended. Just cause someone has brain cancer does not mean they are insane.
#2 If you don't think there are perks to having cancer or any other trial life might throw at you, you are arrogant selfish and blind.
Open your eyes, there are blessings everywhere, if you weren't busy feeling sorry for yourself maybe you could recognise that your life is just one big perk

Nobody wants to be told they have cancer, or 9 months to live. But we learn to deal with it. And even though we may never be able to completely overcome it, we learn to find blessings (perks) along the way.

I've been through Hell and back this last year. But I've also been to Hawaii, made it 7 months past when I was supposed to die, been indoor skydiving, Disneyland, in a hot air balloon, in magazines, on tv, had my own race, met amazing people, been to multiple new states. Lost a lot of friends, family and hair. But I've learned a lot more than I have lost and that is what matters. And if you were to open your eyes for a second, you would realize those are perks.

  2. Rachel, I have been following your blog for several months. I haven't personally been diagnosed with brain cancer, but It has affected me in the deepest way every single day for the last seventeen years which is 3/4 of my life. Let me tell you some of the benifits I experienced from seeing the person I love more than anything in this world battle brain cancer and luekemia.

    1. You trueling understand the importance and the gift of life. And you probably do not take anything or anyone for granted.
    2. You perform a miracle everyday by getting up and thinking today is going to be a good day. From a loved ones perspective, it's like experiencing Christmas everyday when they see your face.
    3. You are INSPIRING people. I am moved by your attitude and outlook on life.I think about you and pray for you frequently and I think you have a lot of other people doing the same. Most people aren't lucky enough to be naturally inspiring to others. You are that kind of person. Your story and your positive attitude makes life worth appreciating.

Somethings in life can only be earned. By the sounds of it you have earned the love of your family, the respect and admiration of your community and a place in Heaven for being such an amazing person. I heard a quote some time ago that says "those that suffer on earth will be made saints in Heaven" and I believe it with every ounce of my being.

Stay strong. Your friends from west point, utah.

  4. I really, really liked this post. You are right, you have had a few perks that other people with other diagnoses don't get. The outpouring of love you have had is awesome; every person should be shown just how important they are like that. I'm going to try harder to show those I love that their life truly matters, just as yours does. Thank you for the reminder.

  15. Hi Rachel, I just sat down and read your whole blog in one sitting!! My 13-year-old nephew, Alex, was just diagnosed with DIPG before Christmas. We're all still reeling with this information and are trying to learn all we can about not only DIPG, but HOW to support my brother and sister-in-law, my nephew and also Alex's 2 younger brothers. Alex just started treatments last week and will also be participating in the St. Jude's Phase 1 trial via Children's Hospital here in St. Louis, Missouri.
I will recommend your blog to my brother, Jeff (Alex's Dad). I'm sure he'll want to read about your journey and the inspiration you instill in others.
Please, Like Alex's FB page, www.facebook.com/hopeforalex & post a message for him! He LOVES getting messages from others. If you'd like to get in direct contact with my brother, let me know. I don't know if that's a weird thing to ask, so just ignore me if it is. LOL!
Thank you for your courage, inspiration, strength and joy. I *hate* that this has to be your journey - or ANYONE'S journey. But your approach to all of it is amazing. God has worked wonders through you.
    Many thanks,
    Jodi

  16. Rachel, You probably have no idea who I am, but I know you mom. I used to stay with Marné and her family for a year a long time ago (92/93 to be exact). Every time I read Diane's posts on FB or in your blog it strikes me how brave you are. You seem to make the most of Everything and manage to be grateful for each day. I am thinking of you and your family a lot and you courage inspires me. /Ann
